Peter Margonelli Biography
Peter Margonelli’s body of work is a collection of blurred landscapes shot out of train windows while in motion. He collapses space by removing contours, contrast and perspective and instead creates a subtler layering of light and shadow, color and luminosity. This subtlety hints at a more uncertain depth. Often his landscapes are paired down to a few salient elements held together in fluid time. Suggesting that images stripped of immediate recognition and reference want to be completed by one’s own experience and emotions, his photographs engage and initiate a dialog with the unconscious. They seem to exist more in the mind’s eye or in memory, than in a recognizable reality. Many times the more ambiguous the image, the more enjoyment one has locating oneself within it. While the imagery invites confusion on several levels the meaning is generated in the process of “sorting things out".
